Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. You can strengthen how clearly and credibly your business is presented, but cannot guarantee a position for every searcher.
Understand the three factors
Relevance is how well a business matches a search. Distance considers how far the business is from the searcher or location used. Prominence concerns how well known the business is, drawing on signals such as links and reviews.
These factors work together. A result at your office can differ from a result across town, even when the words are the same.
Turn the principles into a plan
Start with commercially useful priorities: which services create the right enquiries, which places you genuinely serve, and which landing pages help people choose. Then audit the profile and website against those priorities.
For example, a repair company might have a clear emergency service on its website but an outdated profile link that sends people to a general page. Fixing that journey is a concrete improvement even before any ranking change is visible.
- Choose a small set of relevant searches to monitor.
- Align service information across the profile and website.
- Make contact and booking routes easy to use.
- Build genuine customer feedback and relevant local relationships.
Read results in context
Compare searches from consistent locations and record the date. A location grid can help illustrate how visibility varies, but no single sample describes an entire city.
Combine visibility with enquiry quality. Ask which services people wanted and how they found you. When tracking is available, review that information alongside website and profile performance.
What to take away
- There is no universal Maps position for a business.
- Prioritize relevant services and a clear customer journey.
- Measure enquiries as well as visibility.
